She's happy, I'm happy

Finn got the job! And that makes me happy in three ways.

1. I'm happy because she's happy. She really wanted the job, so I'm glad she got it.
2. I'm happy because her getting the job means we're out of the financial doghouse.
3. I'm happy because her earning money means I'm under less pressure to earn more money. That's not to say I'm generally lazy and don't like to work, but it means that I can focus on finding and doing more freelance work and less at the daily I have learned to despise. Because finding and doing freelance work requires time. The ideas are there, I just need some time to do research, write and sell them.

... in un mare bellissimo

do you know that feeling that arises when you hear a song you haven't listened to in ages? One, that's still a favourite of yours - but you just haven't been in the mood for it in a very long time?

I recently put the Gianna Nannini album Perle back on my computer to listen to it via iTunes. Just now sometimes-friend-sometimes-foe iTunes played me Notti Senza Cuore from that album, which filled me up with this all-encompassing glee and dragged by right back to one of those magical summer moments when I saw Gianna Nannini in concert in the middle of an exhausting yet exhilarating night under the moon.

I'm gonna go look into my archive and look for that post, because I'm 99% sure I blogged about it.

edit: I was right, I did blog about it. It was actually in my very first month of blogging. How is it possible that I remember what I blogged almost four years ago (gosh, my blog is old) but I can't for the life of me remember the things I read a couple of days ago and have to think hard to remember what I ate yesterday?
Here are the lyrics to the Gianna Nannini song, also from back then.

failure to show entails a negative evaluation

I received my invitation to the diploma examination yesterday. Couldn't get it from the post office (not leaving the house and the thesis these days), so my dad got it for me today (it arrived at the post office near my parent's place bc that's the address I used when I started Uni). I just called him and begged him to open it and tell me what it says.
My classmates have been posting their examination-triumvirates in our forum since yesterday and I've been quite nervous about who my examiners would be. It should be fine though, I'm more than OK with the three that I got.

by the way, the date is May, 27th, 4 p.m.
yay! [insert sarcasm] afternoon exam! plenty of time to be nervous all day ;)

paint this planet red

There are songs that infallibly make me infinitely happy. One of them is Perfect Lovesong by The Divine Comedy. It also happens to be a perfect lovesong. Generally a song that features a line like we'll paint this planet red has already won by my rule book. That line was so strong and important for me when I was between 16 and 18, before I temporarily lost my ability to paint the world any color I wanted. Now I don't feel it as strongly as my 16-year old self used to, but I still get the broader sense of what it means to me although I don't have that time and energy anymore. And I still occasionally miss the people I painted this, our, world with, and belting out this song.

My point and I do have one is... go forth and love this song, people. And paint the planet a little.

Give me your love
And I'll give you the perfect lovesong
With a divine Beatles bassline
And a big old Beach Boys sound
I'll match you pound for pound
Like heavy-weights in the final round
We'll hold on to each other
So we don't fall down

I think The Divine Comedy makes me happy in general, because then there's also Generation Sex. I have to say though the videos seem to take away a lot from the music, but youtube is there and I can't be bothered trying to upload mp3s. So just try closing you're eyes or step away from the computer and dance crazy in your living room/office/bedroom/coffee shop :)

I am exhilarated!

First promo for the fifth season of The L Word - and I absolutely love it. It made me forget how disappointed I was in seasons two and three and how narrowly season four became a watchable show.

This one is the first L Word promo ever that truly makes me look forward to the next season. If the promo can already make me laugh and cry and cheer, then this could truly become a great season. Maybe I like it so much because it's not so "drama queen" like, maybe because the song is simply magnificent, maybe because the shots are soft and nicely lighted. Whatever it is, I think I just became a fan again. But have a look for yourselves. And anyone know what the song is, please do tell me...

oh, and I'm so double-posting this.

edit: apparently the song is Be Be Your Love by Rachael Yamagata

plan alphabet

I have a plan. at least I think I have. it's not plan a or b, it's just an idea yet and still needs a little tweaking, but I think I actually know where I'll be going next year, when I'm done with uni and thesis.

music was my first love

I had a friend once, a really great friend. His name was Benedikt. He'd take my sadness away and bring me relieving tears, he'd open my heart and make me happy again. He was always there for me, although I sometimes renounced him. Benedikt is my bassoon. Unfortunately I gave up playing before graduating in a demanding school and having a boyfriend got in the way.

I was on the way of becoming a professional musician. I don't regret not having done that. I mean, I had serious talent, nothing ever came as easy to me as learning to play. Practicing however wasn't my strong point and as a pro I would've had to spend hours practicing, up to five or six hours a day. And that I didn't want, so I deliberately opted against it. I do however regret that I stopped playing altogether.

I realised that yesterday when I was listening to Jaqueline Du Pre playing Elgar's Cello Concerto. I haven't voluntarily listened to classical music since about five years ago, I left all my classical music CDs with my parents when I moved out. They always made me listened, narrow minded like they are when it comes to music, so I rebelled. But now I actually made an effort to download the cello concerto which I have loved ever since I first heard and saw my crush play it when I was 13 and in music camp (hey, at least I don't play flute!). So last night I slumped onto the new sofa and listened to the concerto. and it was recreational. I, who can never relax, was able to do so finally. I amazingly sank deep into that piece of furniture and let my heart, my ears, my soul be filled with music. I've decided I want to play again. I'm curious if I'll actually go through with it.
